- Maharishi center now open in Ames - Anthony Antimuro, director of the center in Ames, said the center plans to teach people how to practice transcendental meditation and sell preventive health care products such as herbal teas and coffees. Mind Over Mortar: Proponents of Vedic Design Believe That Our Homes Can Determine Our Health - The Washington Post reports on a lecture at the National Building Museum entitled A Lecture on Vedic Architecture: A Holistic Approach to Sustainability. "The most powerful influence of natural law on the Earth is the sun," says architect Jonathan Lipman. "In Vedic [theory], the influence of the sun right around the time of sunrise has a whole set of specific nourishing influences. Transcendental specialists offer expertise to valley - Cynthia Starr and her husband, Alarik Arenander, offer lectures in the valley on transcendental meditation. The practice has been the subject of many studies and has been shown to increase brain power and mental clarity. Arenander received his Ph.D in brain research from the University of California of Los Angeles in 1980. He and his wife have been practicing transcendental meditation for 30 years. - TM bolsters notion of a Japanese mind-set over mortality - Last month the American Journal of Cardiology reported that patients with elevated blood pressure who practiced Transcendental Meditation (TM) had reduced death rates and an average longer lifespan than a control group of patients who did not practice the technique. - Transcendental Meditation good for the heart, study finds - Regular practice may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta were conducting a study to see whether transcendental meditation, or TM, could help high schoolers lower their blood pressure. The study — published last year in the American Journal of Hypertension — found that meditators’ blood pressure dipped by an average of three or four points, while that of students in the health education group was unchanged. - Meditation Helps Vascular Function in Black Teens - Transcendental meditation may improve vascular function in African American teenagers with high-normal blood pressure, Vernon A. Barnes, Ph.D., said at the annual meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society.
Transcendental meditation (TM), a process by which “the mind is allowed to settle down to a state of least mental activity,” has been shown to decrease sympathetic nervous system tone, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis activation, and cortisol levels, which are associated with reductions in blood pressure.
In a study by Dr. Barnes and his associates at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly reduced in 50 African American adolescents with high-normal blood pressures who practiced TM twice a day for 4 months (Am. - Can Transcendental Meditation lower rates of death? - One of the first long-term studies of Transcendental Meditation has found that the practice was associated with significantly lower rates of death.
The study's authors said that Transcendental Meditation already has been shown to reduce risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, stress and smoking. - TM extends life and reduces risk factors in heart disease - People who practiced Transcendental Meditation lived longer than people who didn't, experiencing a 23 percent reduction in death rates.
Those are the results of a long-term study appearing in the May 2 issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.
Previous studies had shown that theTranscendental Meditation™ (TM) technique decreased stress and, as a result, also lowered blood pressure. Robert Schneider, who led the research, said: "The study found that in older people with mild high blood pressure, those practising Transcendental Meditation had a 23% lower risk of death from all causes." - University will wire students' brains to track changes - The university hopes to wire all of its 750 students and issue them "brain integration report cards" - purportedly a new way of determining how their college experience changes the brain. - A meditation on brain drain - Does anyone doubt that college damages your brain?
They don't at a small Iowa university, which today will hold a conference on brain research that a news release said "shows that college experience takes a terrible toll on a student's brain." About 100 people are expected to attend the conference at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, which will focus on reversing the effects of academic pressures, binge drinking, poor diet, sleep deprivation and stress on the brain. The threat was enough to urge Dr. Barnes and his associates to conduct a study to determine whether meditation could lower blood pressure in teens. Meditation Not Medication For Students - There's a new approach to helping children cope with stress and improve their performance, both in and out of school.
