- I am writing in response to an article in the Ottawa Citizen, Thursday, July 31, "Parliament Hill on Verge of Building Boom."
As Parliament is the seat of government and thereby affects every Canadian, it is absolutely vital that federal architects and designers take the opportunity to evaluate and understand the most ancient and traditional principles of architecture, so as to ensure that our legislative buildings support the well-being of those involved in the government of Canada.
The influence of building design on well-being and good fortune has come to the forefront of concern in architecture. With the advent of sick building syndrome and concerns over toxicity in materials, we can see how improperly designed buildings may bring negative influences to those living and working in them.
Architects of the modern age acknowledge their debt to master designers of the great civilizations of the past whose structures were not only beautiful and functional, but they also took into account deeper principles of Natural Law to enhanced the health, well-being and success of those living in them.
The greatest historical knowledge of architecture, called Sthapatya Veda, tells us that improperly designed buildings manifests in suffering, disease, bad luck, and conflict, and can afflict the inhabitants generation after generation as long as they continue to occupy those buildings.
According to the principles of Sthapatya Veda, such negative effects accumulate due to improper orientation of the shape or slope of the site and improper placement of the entrances and rooms of the building. Proportions, orientations and placement of rooms, houses, and even whole towns are precisely calculated in Sthapatya Veda to give the greatest benefit-good health, success, good fortune and happiness-to all inhabitants.
One of the most important principles of building in harmony with Natural Law is right direction with respect to the path of the sun, the strongest influence of Natural Law on Earth. For this reason, Sthåpatya Veda feels it is imperative that the entrance to a building face East. This principle is reflected in cultures throughout the world, such as in Canada's Native population, whose traditional building designs had Easterly entrances.
Unfortunately the Parliament Buildings are not designed in accord with these traditional principles of architecture. Even the entrance faces South, which is considered least auspicious and brings negative influences to the inhabitants.
Recent scientific studies in the Journal of Neuroscience show that the neurons in our brain actually fire differently depending on the direction we are facing. There are also "place neurons" in the brain which signal our body's orientation in a room or environment. Thus, the way we face influences brain and body functioning. The ancient knowledge of Sthåpatya Veda goes much further. It describes how our spatial orientation influences our minds and bodies. When we live or work in buildings with improper orientation or proportion, the firing patterns of the neurons are reset in the wrong way. This can contribute to anxiety, lack of creativity, failure in family and professional life, anti-social behaviour, and even criminal tendencies.
I encourage all architects to test this knowledge. They should compare the health and fortune of those living in homes with different entrances and verify that those living in homes with their entrance to the East or North have better fortune than those with their entrance to the South or West.
The new construction on Parliament Hill will affect all Canadians for future generations. Therefore, those involved should review the more traditional principles of Natural Law based architecture. The benefits of designing a building in accord with Natural Law will positively affect Canadians generation after generation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Neil Paterson
